Basic editing techniques

Learn essential editing techniques for your music projects.

Master these editing techniques to work efficiently in SyncWave.

Working with Regions

Regions are containers that hold your musical content (MIDI notes).

Creating Regions

- **Double-click** on an empty track area to create a new region

- **Draw** by clicking and dragging to set the region length

- Regions automatically snap to the grid based on your zoom level

Selecting Regions

- **Click** a region to select it

- **Shift + Click** to select multiple regions

- **Cmd/Ctrl + A** to select all regions on a track

Moving Regions

- **Drag** a selected region to move it

- Hold **Shift** while dragging to lock vertical/horizontal movement

- Regions snap to the grid automatically

Resizing Regions

- Hover over the **left or right edge** of a region

- **Drag** to resize

- Hold **Alt/Option** to disable grid snapping

Duplicating Regions

- Hold **Alt/Option** and drag a region to duplicate it

- Or use **Cmd/Ctrl + D** to duplicate selected regions

Deleting Regions

- Select the region(s) and press **Delete** or **Backspace**

Editing MIDI Notes

Double-click a region to open the piano roll editor.

Drawing Notes

1. Select the **pencil tool** (or hold Cmd/Ctrl)

2. Click and drag on the grid to draw a note

3. The note length matches your current grid setting

Selecting Notes

- **Click** a note to select it

- **Shift + Click** to add to selection

- **Click and drag** to box-select multiple notes

- **Cmd/Ctrl + A** to select all notes

Moving Notes

- **Drag** selected notes to move them

- Move **vertically** to change pitch

- Move **horizontally** to change timing

Resizing Notes

- Hover over the **right edge** of a note

- **Drag** to make the note longer or shorter

Adjusting Velocity

Note velocity controls how loud/hard the note plays:

- Select notes and adjust in the velocity lane at the bottom

- Brighter colors = higher velocity

Quantization

Quantize aligns notes to the grid for tighter timing:

1. Select the notes you want to quantize

2. Press **Q** or go to Edit > Quantize

3. Choose your quantize value:

- 1/4 - Quarter notes

- 1/8 - Eighth notes

- 1/16 - Sixteenth notes

- 1/32 - Thirty-second notes

Quantize Strength

Adjust how strictly notes snap to the grid:

- **100%** - Notes snap exactly to grid

- **50%** - Notes move halfway to grid

- **0%** - No change

Undo and Redo

SyncWave keeps a history of your changes:

RedoCmd/Ctrl + Shift + Z

The undo history is preserved until you close the project.

Copy, Cut, and Paste

Standard clipboard operations work with both regions and notes:

CopyCmd/Ctrl + C
CutCmd/Ctrl + X
PasteCmd/Ctrl + V

Paste behavior: Content is pasted at the current playhead position.

Auto-Save

SyncWave automatically saves your work:

- Changes are saved every few seconds

- You'll see a "Saved" indicator in the toolbar

- No need to manually save!

1. **Use keyboard shortcuts** to speed up your workflow

2. **Zoom in** for precise note editing

3. **Loop a section** to focus on specific parts

4. **Quantize after recording** to tighten timing while keeping feel
